A core service of Digital Publishing New Zealand is the digital warehouse system. This system (provided by IGP under license – SaaS – software as a service) encompasses digital asset management and digital asset distribution services. Rights holders ebooks, with associated cover images and metadata, are stored in the digital warehouse and distributed to online retailers who have agreements with DPNZ.
Digital Publishing New Zealand has a preferential pricing agreement with IGP for the conversion services that IGP offer. Rights holders can access conversion services through DPNZ by providing a copy of the pdf files for their book or the printed book. A quote for the cost of conversion will be prepared and agreed with the rights holder, prior to the actual conversion beginning. Once converted, Rights holders can choose to have their title made available on www.greatnzebooks.co.nz
The consumer-facing brand of Digital Publishing New Zealand is Great NZ Ebooks. The website www.greatnzebooks.co.nz is being developed by the Image Centre. Consumers will be able to find titles from New Zealand authors and publishers on this website and then link-out to online retailers that rights holders have elected to have their titles sold by. Profiles of authors and publishers will be hosted on the website and consumers will be able to write reviews and rate the titles.
Collective agreements have been reached with two retailers enabling rights holders who have distribution agreements with DPNZ to have their titles sold through these partners. Agreements have been reached with Kobo Books and Wheelers Books. Favourable terms have been reached in both agreements to maximise returns to rights holders.
Digital Publishing New Zealand is working towards a print on demand (POD) solution for New Zealand publishers and authors. The POD service will allow content to be delivered through a secure electronic channel directly to print shops. This will enable custom print runs to be distributed through a worldwide network of printers as and when required.
Payments for the sales of rights holders’ titles will be made by Digital Publishing New Zealand. DPNZ will receive bulk payments from the retailers with whom DPNZ has retail agreements and collate these into individual sales reports for each rights holder.
